Wood Selection

The feeling of discovering the right board to use for a piece is relief, joy, and undeserved grace.

My method of selecting wood varies. Sometimes, I find just what I'm looking for, whether it be a particular pattern of swirls and curls, or long spans of grain that are straight as an arrow. At other times, a certain slab or board inspires the design from the beginning, and a piece is built to enhance and emphasize its natural form. Either way, I carefully match color and grain, preferably using parts cut from the same tree.

I use sustainably–forested wood from responsible sawyers who care about what they do and the trees they cut. I also enjoy finding trees with a story. If you have had a tree come down and you'd like it live on in another form, I would love to help you realize that vision.
